Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA)

Preparation and Evaluation Workshop

OVERVIEW
Heated vacuum tables will be used for deposition of catalyst inks directly onto Nafion 117 membranes. The catalyst coated membrane (CCM) method will be used for preparation of membrane electrode assemblies using Johnson Matthey catalysts. Attendees may supply their own anode or cathode catalysts. Students will assemble and condition the fuel cell and acquire full fuel cell and anode polarization curves using a potentiostat/galvanostat. Hydrogen desorption curves will be used to estimate electrochemically active areas of the fuel cell catalyst layers. The workshop includes an MEA preparation manual, lectures and discussion periods. The single cell fuel cell is for attendees to keep.

Instructors
Dr. Harry Rivera, TECRE Director
Dr. Eugene S. Smotkin, Professor of Chemistry at Northeastern University
Dr. Bogdan Gurau, NuVant Systems Inc.
